What is a Bahá'í?

'To be a Bahá'í simply means to love all the world, to love humanity and try to serve it, to work for universal peace and universal brotherhood.' – 'Abdu'l-Bahá

What is the Bahá'í Faith?

Once in every millennium, God sends a messenger of love. Past manifestations of God include Abraham, Buddha, Christ, Krisna, Moses, Muhammad and Zoroaster. God has sent a manifestation for our time. His name is Bahá'u'lláh, the "Glory of God". Bahá'ís call this 'Progressive Revelation.'

What do Bahá'ís Believe?

Bahá'ís follow principles that will transform the world. The first of these are the 'three onenesses.'

One God

God, the Creator of the universe, is limitless, all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-loving. The reality of God is beyond human understanding.

One Faith

Religions apply universal truths to the culture and age where they are revealed. The Bahá'í Writings bring the teachings for our time.

One People

Bahá'u'lláh teaches us to practice 'unity in diversity.' Bahá'ís are united in their love of God and celebrated for their diversity of culture.

Goals

What are Bahá'í Goals?

Bahá'u'lláh has brought the New Jerusalem. Bahá'ís world-wide apply the teachings of Bahá'u'lláh in their daily lives and in their work to create harmony in their lives and unity and in the world.

No Prejudice

Prejudices of race, nation, religion, economic means, political party are the cause of blind imitation of the past. It is very important to see the world clearly.

World Peace

An agreement must be made by all nations to prevent aggression. With this agreement in place, arms can be reduced to provide for domestic order.

Practical Faith

Too much religion is blind superstition and too much science is crass materialism. When science and religion agree, there can be real progress.

Spiritual Economy

Extremes of wealth and poverty are harmful to all citizens. A balanced economy encourages the poor, challenges the rich and stronger for all.

Auxiliary Language

Languages often get in the way of exchanging ideas. A universal language will help us communicate. We must choose one or create one for everyone.

Universal Education

Mothers are the first teachers of the next generation. Educating the girls will quickly educate both boys and girls of the next generation in a very short time.

Men and Women

Men and women are like the wings of a bird. The bird can fly only when both wings are developed equally. We must give women a voice and listen.

Equal Justice

There must be one standard. The rules of law must be applied to both high and low alike. When people receive equal justice, they support each other.

Unity in Diversity

This is not a mere system of rules and laws. We worship God by serving people. We practice reverence for life and respect each other in harmony.

Spiritual Life

Bahá'ís are asked not to drink alcohol or smoke. Bahá'ís pray and meditate at least once every day. Bahá'ís abstain from food and drink during daylight hours for three weeks every year. Work is regarded as worship in the spirit of service.

Pray Daily

'I bear witness, O my God, that Thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee. I testify, at this moment, to my powerlessness and to Thy might, to my poverty and to Thy wealth. There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting.' – Bahá'u'lláh

Fast Yearly

Bahá'ís fast from sunrise to sunset for about three weeks each year. This is a time of prayer and meditation and a time for reflection on the year ahead.

Work Service

Bahá'ís carry forward an 'ever-advancing civilization' and worship God by serving humanity. Work performed in the spirit of service is regarded as worship.

Administrative Order

There is no clergy in the Bahá'í Faith. Nine people Assemblies find the truth through consultation. Facts are gathered and spiritual principles applied. Consultation is discussing a diversity of views toward a united goal.

Local Spiritual Assembly

Communities with nine or more adults elect a Local Spiritual Assembly every year. The LSA replaces the clergy and nurtures the well-being of the community.

National Spiritual Assembly

The LSAs elect the National Spiritual Assembly every year. The NSA coordinates and nurtures the LSAs and encourages the growth of the larger community.

Universal House of Justice

NSA members elect the Universal House of Justice every 5 years. The UHJ is the supreme body and nurtures the rapidly growing world-wide community.

Three Bahá'í Symbols

There are three main symbols that represent the Bahá'í Faith. These are the nine-pointed star, the ring stone symbol and the Greatest Name.

Nine Pointed Star

Nine represents the completion of the Adamic Cycle - nine major Manifestations of God, Bahá'í Houses of Worship have nine sides and nine doors.

Ring stone Symbol

The ring stone symbol represents three levels of existence - heaven, earth and Spirit connecting them through the Manifestations of God.

Greatest Name

The Symbol of the Greatest Name is sacred to Bahá'ís. This is a stylized form of 'Yá Bahá’u’l-Abhá' or 'Oh Thou Glory of the Most Glorious.'

Bahá'í Meetings

Meetings such as devotionals and firesides are held on a regular basis and are free and open to the public.

Regional Meetings happen in Chicago and also at the House of Worship in Wilmette.

National Conventions are held in Chicago once a year.

House of Worship

All Houses of Worship are funded by members. They all have a dome and nine doors and devotional services include scriptures from all faiths.

We have children's classes from ages 5-11 and would welcome your child. We focus on moral and spiritual values. We care about the environment and children will learn love and respect.

Devotional Gatherings

Bahá'í Devotion

History of our local Bahá'í Community. We began at an early time. This is the local Bahai history of our area.

Firesides

Fireside chats are simple introductions to the Bahá'í Faith. These meetings usually last about an hour and involve a short presentation of the history, basic teachings, and how Bahá'í is related to other religions. All questions are welcome. Healthy refreshments and informal discussion follows.

Fireside Chats

People at Fireside chats often will focus on a specific topic, like the equality of women, the environment, translating spiritual values into service to humanity, and other issues. Bahá'ís believe truth is one, and both science and religion must agree.

Youth Gatherings

Bahá'í Youth Gatherings are usually discussions or practical activities to make the world a better place. Discussions involve how individuals apply the Bahá'ie teachings in their own lives and how people have found a way to serve humanity.

Study Circles

Study Circles are for adults and usually involve discussions of the Bahá'í writings. Some quotes are compared with others to gain a deeper understanding of their meaning. Other times, individuals ask questions about the meaning of a particular phrase. Sometimes these meetings have a theme and sometimes not. They are almost always enlightening and insightful.

Bahá'í Study

Studying Bahá'í writings can be done on any level. Some people have discovered new meaning for their lives by researching a particular topic. Others are discovering these teachings for the first time. Each can gain insights from the other. All are welcome.

Bahá'í Media

There are several channels for Bahá'í Media - Bahai Prayers App, Bahai Radio US and the Bahai World News Service from the world center. The authentic texts are archived and available at the Bahá'í Reference Library.

How to Become a Bahá'í?

There are two simple steps to becoming a Bahá'í: belief in Bahá'u'lláh and enrollment in the Bahá'í community. The first step is personal while the second step is administrative.
